Joseph Michael Dahlberg was born January 19, 1990 and was known to everyone as Michael. He was the youngest of three, born to Michael and Kyoung Sim (Kay) Dahlberg. From his first breath, Michael was faced with an illness that grew in severity throughout his life. Born with DiGeorge Syndrome (immune and calcium deficiency) and Tetralogy of Fallot (heart defect), he underwent open-heart surgery at age one and experienced complications that contributed to and caused Chorea Syndrome (involuntary movement).

Despite all of this, Michael was an athlete and enjoyed all sports. He particularly loved baseball and the White Sox. He also played softball and was a designated hitter, and sometimes he could steal bases. Another sport he loved was bowling, and he would bowl with friends every Thursday. In his highest game, he bowled a 178. Michael loved golf and enjoyed the times he would frequent the practice putting green with his mom or drive the golf cart for his dad, chasing geese up and down the fairway.

Michael loved visiting places, whether it was going to Hawaii with the Kids Wish Network, visiting family in South Korea, or taking a trip with his mom and dad to Ireland. He also loved to just get in the car and “drive a little bit” with his mom.

Another of Michael’s favorite pastimes was going out to eat. His favorite restaurants were Taco Bell and Chili’s, and he especially loved a good cheeseburger with fries.

Michael was a social butterfly and had many friends from all walks of life. He had a way of seeing the good in all and showed unconditional love with a big hug and his contagious smile. Michael would reach out to so many online and Facebook friends by saying ‘wutzup’.

Michael’s attitude in every moment was positive and he lived life to the fullest, each and every day, never taking it for granted. He enjoyed his life and taught his family so much through every precious moment. Despite his difficult situation, he never once complained and was always smiling.

After such a fulfilling life, Michael’s time ended peacefully at home surrounded by his loving and proud family. His dad put Michael’s battle into words, “God seemed to try to reel him in several times only to have Michael jump off the hook. God finally hooked his Angel Fish on November 13, 2016”.

Michael is survived by his parents Michael and Kyoung Sim, his sister Kory, his brother Tom, and his grandma Catherine.

    Dear Mike and Kay,

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your son Michael.

Even though I never met Michael, I could feel his beautiful spirit and deep heart in the brief eulogy that you wrote.

I did however, know his dad Mike very well. Mike and I first met each other in 1979 in Seattle, Washington.

I have always admired Mike. I absolutely love the photograph of him when he was playing football.

I can still remember Mike’s visit with me in Denver several years ago. He has an excellent golfer and wanted to know where he could find the best courses.

Even though I did not know Michael, I do know his parents.

They say that the apple does not fall from far from the tree.

I know that young Michael, who entered the spirit world at the pure young age of 16, was a great young man.

A great young man who inspired others with his love of life and his love for everyone he met.

    With love and deep respect,
    Roger

    Dearest Michael and Kyoung Sim,

It was with both joy and sadness that Vivien and I read of Michael’s passing. I will always, personally, have an ongoing smile and warmth in my heart for your Son. I will never forget what a great soul he showed to me upon meeting him and spending time with him and you. Few people have ever touched my so deeply with the spirit of God incarnate. Michael did and it is why there is no question but that that is where he is, with God, in a vast, vast world of eternal possibilities and endless peace and joy. How much he deserves being there!

Thank you for sharing him with us. What a GIFT.

    Eternal love,
    Philip & Vivien
