Mariko Hosokawa (Abe) was born on July 1, 1947 in Kamo City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan as the second child of Shozo Abe and Kimi Abe, and grew up in Gunma Prefecture.
In 1975, Mariko met her husband Hiroshi at the 1800 Couples Marriage Blessing, with whom she would share more than 40 years of her life together. Between 1980 to 1983, they had three children: Shigeishi, Takami, and Tadamichi. They are now blessed with 10 grandchildren.
She was very active in the church community during her lifetime. She participated in the Yankee Stadium and Washington Monument rallies, contributed to witnessing activities around the United States, and participated in the early Cheongpyung providence with her husband. She was also very involved with the American Clergy Leadership Conference and frequently visited Pastor Harrison Bolton’s Greater New Hope Church with her family.
Mariko loved music and koto, and she always put on Japanese traditional music or classical music in the home. After moving to Chicago in 1993, she frequently performed the koto in cultural events around the area. In her final years, she devoted most of her time to music and made a large footprint in the Chicago Japanese community. She taught private koto lessons and was active with the Chicago Koto Group and the Soyokaze Japanese Chorus.
Whenever there was an event, Mariko would always attend together with her husband who would take pictures, and after his health deteriorated, she would be there for him until the day he passed away.
She never got herself to throw things away, and her collection of cassette tapes, CDs, church magazines, etc. kept on growing. On the other hand, she would organize all the photos she took and give copies of CDs to the people she took.
She had asthma when young, and many other health complications during her life, but despite that she was actively participating in events, and shortly after successfully performing in the CJC 2020 New Year’s Event, she was hospitalized due to lung and kidney problems. Mariko passed away peacefully on February 17, 2020, six months after her husband’s ascension.
Mariko lived a full and active life, always happy to take care of her family – whether it was her own family, the church family, or the Chicago Japanese family.
Her Seonghwa Ceremony will be held on Saturday, February 22 at Marizzo Funeral Home (2550 Hassell Rd, Hoffman Estates, IL 60169).

Mrs. Hosokowa took care of me when I was a struggling member. She helped to raise up all my kids and was always so kind to members, especially loving the children. She’s a delightful person, very dedicated to her family and friends. I will miss her and her husband and their loyalty to True Parents. Early members of Saeilo Machinery, they exemplified dedication beyond the norm. Their family is so appreciated, setting an exquisite example of CIG citizens. You shall be sorely missed, Mr. and Mrs. Hosokowa!

I worked with Hiroshi, as a new member on Housestaff at the World Mission Center in NYC from 1976 to 1982. Hiroshi Hosokawa and Hiroshi Tanaka were both the engineers at the WMC, and I was one of the electricians. Hiroshi and Mariko were an 1800 couple, and I had just joined the church in Los Angeles in 1976, and it was comforting to have an elder Blessed couple working with us, since most of us had just recently joined the church from many locations and we all came to NYC for the Yankee Stadium Rally.
I pray that Hiroshi and Mariko’s Blessed Children can appreciate all the hard work that their parents did for the Unification Church and True Parents. They Lived to attend True Parents.

Hosokawa Mama was always so cheerful and warm and inviting whenever I met her at Chicago Church as a kid. I was so deeply saddened to hear of her (and her husband’s) passing. But we will meet again yes?

Fond memories of Mrs Hosakowa helping my wife with our children while we were with Saeilo Machinery. . I felt such a kind and loving heart from her and am so grateful she took my wife under her wing. May she have a smooth transition to spirit world where she will be welcomed with Love
