Jim had overcome many difficulties in this life by the time he joined the Unification Movement in 1987. Through the guidance of Jesus and Scriptures, Jim had adopted a very disciplined, abstinent lifestyle, living very simply and serving others as he could. He came to Project Volunteer Food Bank that year feeling guided by Jesus, and was eager to know how he could help. (Unificationists began Project Volunteer Food Bank in Oakland California in 1975. It was one of the first food banks in America and the first in the San Francisco Bay Area.)

Jim was excited about the possibility of serving the community and helping others. In addition, he became especially curious about True Parents and the Divine Principle and joined the movement soon after, at the age of 40. His first project was to create a large “Project Volunteer” sign on the front of the warehouse. Jim served as a project volunteer for six years, finally becoming its interim director. During those years, he also created a ‘Thanksgiving Brown Bag” giveaway program.

Jim and his wife, Bruna, were Blessed in marriage in 1994. Jim’s son would also join the Unification movement and receive the Marriage Blessing. Together with Bruna, Jim worked on Blessing campaigns and attended a 40-day workshop in Cheong Pyeong, Korea, continuing to fulfill ancestor liberation.

For many years, Jim served seniors by providing them with transportation, witnessing to them with fervor, and praying for them and their families every day until the day prior to being admitted to the emergency room.

He created unforgettable experiences when he served in Ocean Church. He said that one day he was asked to deliver bait to a boat far into the ocean. It was True Father’s boat. True Father himself took three heavy bags that Jim was handing him into his boat with extreme ease. Jim was extremely proud of being able to serve True Father directly and the fact that True Father seemed to appreciate Jim’s work and was smiling at him.

Jim remained steadfast in his close relationship with Jesus and True Parents. After being diagnosed, he lived and struggled with liver cancer for the final 11 months of his life, keeping up his study of the Bible and the teachings of True Parents, which he relied on as he prepared for his ascension to his new life.

Bruna and I met an elderly gentleman and his son today at a local coffee shop where Jim used to frequent. The man knew Jim and reminded us that Jim had served his country in Vietnam as a medic, seeing much intense battlefield combat in caring for our wounded. That explains a big chunk of his young life, since he was born in 1947 and joined the Unification Church at age 40. God bless our dear brother in Christ and True Parents.

Our condolences to Bruna and her and Jim’s families. I did not know Jim, but reading from his testimony, I can see he was an excellent member who truly lived for the sake of others. God be with him and with his family and friends.
