Herb Mayr was an exceptional brother of rare humor, high intelligence (a science wiz), tenacity, faith, and athleticism. One classic story of Herb was a unique fundraising technique of his, in which he would enter a bar and although no more than five feet tall, he would declare that he could kick a dollar bill off of the top edge of a door, which he would then have a tall person place on the top edge of an open door. People would laugh and agree to buy his roses if could accomplish his impossible boast. Extraordinarily athletic and much slimmer than in his later years, Herb would leap high in the air and use a martial arts sweep kick (he was a trained martial artist) to nip the bill off the door top. The crowd would roar and Herb would sell out. Herb was a man of faith, a devoted husband, loving dad, brother and much more.
Herb was raised Catholic, attending Loyola University when he met and joined the Unification Movement in 1974 after responding to a Unificationist newspaper add entitled “Would You Like To Work For World Peace?” Herb fundraised on MFT and worked in CARP until 1977 when he was called to attend UTS Seminary from which he would graduate in 1979 in the 3rd graduating class. Thereafter, Herb worked in Ocean Church, Paragon House Publishers, and traveled the world as a leader in the Youth Seminar on World Religions.
Herb worked very hard to support his family, church, and world, persevering through much to conclude his earthly journey.

Herb Mayr passed away from a sudden heart attack on December 29, 2017, and a moving Seonghwa Ceremony for him was held at the Bruceville-Eddy Community Church on January 6, 2018. Herb is survived by his mother Marjorie Mayr, wife Shizuka, daughter Elisa, four brothers: Rick, Time, Brian and Oliver and six sisters: Rachael, Brenda, Peggy, Connie, Patricia and Linda. Herb was the oldest son and third child.

Herb was a great brother. He would love to get massages at UTS–I’d start off and he would say, “I’ll give you a half an hour to stop that.” A good buddy of Lee Shapiro; I’m sure they are hanging out together in Heaven. A devoted staff person for the unity of world religions, working with the crew that assembled the first Assembly of the World’s Religions. He never took the professors very seriously, which was a good thing! And just a whiz at some new-fangled machine called a desktop computer. I doubt that even 30 years later they caught up with his speed. Herb, great to know you, God bless and see you later.

Friends – I remember Herbert from our days together in CARP. Herbert was funny, funny, funny. I have fond memories of him. I am sorry that he has passed. I have not seen him for many years.

My heart goes out to Herb and his family during this transition time. I had the pleasure of being in Herb’s trinity while at UTS and thoroughly enjoyed his friendship, sharp intellect, and sense of humor. We had many great times together. I look forward to seeing him again one day, when we both will look younger and fresher. In the meantime, may God bless and comfort all in his family.

I knew Herb from both Ocean Church and CARP. My deepest connection with him was when he was the college student leader at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and I was assigned to his center back in 1980. What sticks to mind is how well he took care of us at that time, specifically during fundraising times.
Instead of just dropping us off, and if necessary kicking us out – like most captains including me usually did – Herb would first take us to McDonald’s or some coffee shop and get us coffee and some apple pies or whatever and we’d have refill after refill and share together. A lot of it was listening to Herb because he would share so many interesting stories – trying (successfully) to inspire us as we were getting caffeinated.
By the time we were done, we were all ready to go! And we went out with lots of energy and happiness and, more times than not, good result.
Herb Mayr was that kind of person; I realized that he really took care of people and cared for people. He had a wonderful heart and was and is an inspiration for my life of faith in terms of how to treat others.
God bless and comfort you, Shizuka-san and family, as our dear brother Herb makes his transition to a truly heavenly place in the eternal world.

First met Herb at the seminary. He was a year ahead of me. What I mostly remember was his sense of humor. Later, we worked together in Ocean Church. Again, what stands out was his smile and laughter. My sincere condolences to his wife and children. He was a good guy and though we did not see each other for many years, the world is a lesser place without him.

In the early 80’s when I was a seminarian and Herb was working with RYS, I remember sitting down with him at one of the rounds in the dining room. Somehow the conversation turned to physical prowess and I can still remember him saying, “You know when your short and bald you need something, me I got great biceps!” Then he flexed his biceps which were on the table. He had some great biceps and it was such a funny experience!! We had a good laugh. Luv ya man.

To Shizuka and Elisa: You have my prayers along with the compassion of the Bronx Family members. I’ve known Herb since he joined. I remember him when he was a spring chicken in Texas . I became more connected with him and through his spiritual mother, Beatriz Gonzalez. So we had a special spiritual connection. Definitely, like everyone says so well, we will miss him but he goes unforgotten. He’s a dreamer who will keep bringing joy to us and many others. He had a natural way of looking at a person and making you feel understood. Bless him and you for your sacrifice. Dear Shizuka,
My heart goes out to you and your family at this time.
I came to know Herb, when I did my summer internship from Barrytown with IRF at the New Yorker, in August and September of 1987. This was a extremely memorable time, and most of all I remember laughing at Herb’s humor. No doubt he is now in the spirit world with Pres. and Mrs. David Kim, and all that have gone before him, creating a light atmosphere.
I have the feeling that his ancestors were bavarian — from my experience people with a very good sense of humor!

Dear Shizuka san and Elisa, I never had the opportunity to meet Herb, but he sounds like a wonderful brother and the world is a better place for all that he did while he was here. My husband passed away 7 years ago and since then he has visited us in our dreams (and the dreams of other brothers and sisters)to share messages of love, appreciation and protection for our family. As soon as Herb gets a bit settled in the SW I’m sure he will be looking out for you both and never be far away.

I met Herbie at UTS, where he made it clear to all that he could *still* kick a dollar bill off the top of a door! Herb said he had been a Gold Gloves boxer back in Texas during his younger days, and I believe it. He loved sports. Later in CARP about 30 of us CARP members invaded a left wing rally at the steps in front of the US Congress building, led by one and only Tiger Park. Herbie earned the distinction of reaching the top of the steps where the speakers were ranting on. Fearless. Later, in Ocean Church, he ran past my boat holding onto a hooked tuna from his boat. Man of action. I’m sure he’s still working hard. See you, brother.
