Lawrence David Criner joined the Unification Movement in Oakland, California in 1975 after having walked across America in search of God and a better understanding of the underlying moral character of America.
His first mission was on MFT after which he was called to study at Unification Theological Seminary in 1977. While he was at the seminary, he worked at a crisis center in nearby Woodstock, New York, where he saved one woman’s life by talking her out of suicide. He also traveled down to Harlem to deliver donated bread and other food to old-age homes and nursery schools.
After he graduated from the seminary, he continued to work in Harlem, hoping to connect the charity work he was doing with community service programs at colleges and universities in New York City. He stayed in Harlem until True Father assigned him to be one of the thirteen original Ocean Church leaders. He pioneered Savannah, and then went to Boston, where he led the Ocean Church. He fished for tuna and striped bass in the summers in Gloucester and Provincetown, Massachusetts.
He wanted to join the Washington Times when it was first founded but was persuaded to stay in Ocean Church with the promise that he could work on our newspaper in New York after a year or so. He did join the New York paper and published several commentaries.
When the World & I magazine was founded in 1985, Larry became an editor in the Modern Thought section where he continued to work until the magazine closed in 2004. As an editor, he won two Silver Gavel Awards from the American Bar Association for his coverage of legal issues. While he was at the World & I, he also wrote commentaries for the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post.
Larry became interested in nature photography while he was still at the World & I, and his photographs were published in the magazine.
He was Blessed in marriage with Lynn Musgrave in Madison Square Garden in 1982. They have one son, Jacob Criner.
Lawrence David Criner ascended to the spirit world after a sudden heart attack on October 17, 2018. His Seonghwa will be held on November 3, and 1:30 PM at the New Hope Family Church (4801 Tesla Dr., Bowie, MD 20715).
